The
ghost doctors
This story has been told from father to son
in the city of Belém do Pará. It all started on a full moon night on a summer
Saturday. Two boys were talking while sitting on the porch of one of their
houses.
“Do you believe in a ghost?” Asked the
youngest.
"I don't!" Said the other.
"Yes, you do!" Insisted the
youngest.
"You can bet not," replied the
other.
- It's all right. I bet my soccer ball that
you don't have the courage to enter the cemetery at night.
“Ah, is it?” Said the boy who had been
challenged. - Well then, let's go to the cemetery, and I'll prove my courage.
So the two boys went to the cemetery
street. The gate was closed. The silence was profound. It was so dark ... They
started to feel afraid.
To win the bet, you had to cross the street
and beat your hand on the cemetery gate. The boy who had met the challenge ran.
He stopped in front of the gate and started making faces at his friend. Then he
leaned against the gate and tried to beat his hand on it. That was when he
realized that the shirt was stuck.
- Help! Somebody help me! ”He shouted, then
passed out.
At that, an old man appeared from the
bottom of the cemetery, opened the gate and called the other boy.
- Your friend pinned his shirt sleeve to
the gate and passed out with fear. Poor little guy thought some ghost was
holding him.
The boy noticed that the old man was very thin, almost transparent.
- Thanks. What is your name?
- I'm the doctor here. I will wake up your
friend.
The old man passed his hand over the passed-out
boy's head and he woke up instantly.
"Go home, my children," he said.
- It's past bedtime.
The next day, the boys went to look for the
old man to thank him for his help. But they didn't find him, either in the
cemetery or anywhere. And that's how they both lost their fear of a ghost, when
they realized that not all mysterious beings do evil. On the contrary, they can
even help. Like that doctor, who never came again.
