Twitter tries to stop people sharing articles they have not read

The social media platform Twitter is trying to stop people from sharing articles they have

not read.                                                                                  

Twitter will perform an experiment on Android devices. A message will appear when users

want to share an article they have not read on the platform. The message will ask the user

if they want to open the article.

Many users share articles without reading them first. A 2016 study from Columbia

University and Microsoft found that fifty-nine per cent of links that people post on Twitter

are never opened.

Twitter’s solution is not to ban sharing without reading. Instead, it wants users to think

again about their actions on the platform. The company wants to improve ‘platform

health’. It doesn’t want people saying that they are trying to stop users expressing their

opinions.

In May 2020, the company performed a different experiment. It asked users to change

their replies if they were about to send a message that was not polite. The experiment was

not very effective. Half of the messages that the system identified were between friends.

Twitter said that it was trying to make people think again about their use of language. The

company said that when people are too angry to think carefully they might say something

they regret.
